International Year of the Forest
The United Nations has made 2011 the International Year of Forests and so it seems appropriate that we have enjoyed a good year of woodland growth at Harbour View Woodland Burial Ground.
While the weather has not pleased everyone, through the Summer in particular, the trees and the hedgerows have gone from strength-to-strength putting on considerable growth, foliage and fruit. Indeed some of the fruit trees had to be relieved of their burden as their branches bent double under the strain.
As we approach Autumn, the changing colours are a constant pleasure to see.
The Woodland Trust – a charity that owns and protects considerable acreage of ancient woodland – is due to publish a paper about the vital role played by trees, woods and forests in the UK today. ‘The State of the UK’s Forests’ will be available for download from www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/publications
The increasing popularity of woodland burial demonstrates how society is in-tune with such concerns for the natural world around us and that we should not spoil it for future generations.
